The subject of patents is always very important and whether to patent or not patent is just as important. Our Feb. speaker has been a patent agent for a decade and was employed by the patent office as a patent examiner as well. So he will give our group a real view into getting a patent and the ins and outs of the process with the new laws. It will be my pleasure to present Dr. Brian MacDonald.

Let me introduce myself:
I’m Dr. Brian MacDonald, a patent agent practicing in material science, mechanical, electrical, communications, and other technologies. Once an experimental nuclear physicist, and then a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent Office, I’ve worked on the client side of the patent fence now for over ten years. The patent world spans patent application preparation to licensing deals and even litigation. It is too complex for every player to claim mastery in every stage. I write and file patent applications, and I argue for patents with patent examiners day in and day out. On a good day, I even get a patent for a client. But there are no guarantees. It’s a civil, orderly, but often adversarial chess game. I can tell you all about it.
If you want a patent, a patent application must be filed. But what is a patent application and how is it filed? How is it written? If you hire a patent agent or patent attorney to write and file a patent application for you, what are you paying for? What is the work product? I’m an experienced patent agent who was once a patent examiner. I’ve written hundreds of patent applications. Let me give you a brief tour of the trench in which patent applications are forged and patents minted. This is not a class to prepare you to write your own patent application. This is just a presentation on what must be done to gain patent-pending and patent status, and what it is you get for your money or efforts at that stage.
